Category: Let's talk
So, the guy from the Geek Squad was just here working on our tv. I have my netbook plugged into external speakers so I can hear it better. Fortunately I have my speech sped up pretty fast because I decided to scroll through the most recent topics on the Zone boards. Two of the subject lines I came across were "Fucking" and "How do you feel about anal sex?" Some words just sorta jump out at ya even with fast speech - know what I mean? This guy probably thinks I'm a total perv.
Guess I learned that lesson. lol
Okay?
I'm not saying this is a pointless topic, but...where are you trying to go with this? is this about the topic titles, or about how those just happen to be the words that stand out to people who don't hear speech that fast every day? or perhaps both, or neither?
I'm pretty sure these people have probably seen or heard a lot worse from people's computers, but I do see how that could be a bit awkward. this is why I always wear headphones whenever I'm browsing for my own enjoyment/personal reasons. It's not really that I have anything to hide. I just think that what I'm doing on my computer is really none of anyone else's business. the visual equivalent would be someone staring at your computer screen over your shoulder while you're browsing the web. I realize this doesn't bother some people, but to me, you have your entertainment, and I have mine. If I want to show you something, I will, and vice versa, but my computer activities are part of my own free time; not yours. I think of it like thoughts. we don't share all of them. I'm sure we all have our own little inner conversations that never go anywhere. this isn't bad; it doesn't mean we have something to hide. it's just something we share only with ourselves. Same concept for me, really.
Anyway, I've probably gotten a bit off topic. My appologies.
to the original poster, were you expecting sympathy for the fact the tech guy heard what you probably deem bad words on your computer? if so, as Jess said, I'm sure he has heard, and perhaps even experienced, far worse.
I seriously don't understand why some people are so uptight about this sort of thing. I mean, who cares whether you're perceived as a perve by a technician who will probably never see you again? even if he does, why care?
I'm sure he isn't the first person in the world to view you in a way you don't like, nor will he be the last.
To the original poster, I'd probably feel the same way. If it ws sped up though, he may not have been paying attention enough to catch that (most people who aren't used to it don't seem to understand the screenreader's speech too well even at a normal speed anyway), and if you didn't look embarrassed or anything, he might not even think or have thought anything of it either if he did understand it. I wouldn't worry too much about it. *smile* I know it could be hard not to feel self-conscious about it though, as sometimes I feel the same when reading something without earphones that I'd rather be reading privately.
I usually do the same as poster 2 though and wear earphones and/or just use a Braille display, plus I also turn off the screen. But I've never listened to something that I didn't want others to hear unless I was at the computer and either had the volume low or was wearing earphones. So I guess your thing could be a lesson; wait 'til you're alone or can have an earbud plugged in, or buy wireless headphones if you have to be away from the computer. *smile*
another thing I forgot to add earlier, is that, with the topic titled "fucking", for instance, how in the world would you sugar coat that?
also, why waste time trying to please those who are offended by fowl language, when if it didn't exist, they'd still find something else to gripe about?
society really is becoming too damn soft for my liking. no one wants to call things as they are anymore, which is absolutely sickening.
You can't control everything. If someone finds out what you were reading so be it. It's not like you were intending for them to hear it anyway right?
Not really sure where I was going with the post, other than just relating something that happened that for me was personally slightly awkward. I figured others who use speech might have had similar experiences and thus might find it mildly amusing. Quite obviously, I was wrong.
My comment "Now this guy probably things I'm a perve" was meant with sarcasm or at the very least dry mirth but of course that doesn't come across when using speach or braille. Oh well. Rest assured that I'm truly not concerned inn any meaningful way that some guy who fixes tv's thinks ill of me.
If others are hear, I usually do wear earbuds but I also like to try to give my ears a break when I can. I'm proned to ear infections and my doctor said that wearing headphones allot could be one cause. It was just one of those times when I really wasn't even thinking about it until it happened and then I thought to myself, hmm well, that was awkward. lol
Happy Heart, no, I wasn't looking for sympathy. Give me a break. Lighten the hell up and let go of some of that pent up hostility. You seem so angry.
no hostility here; it was simply a question. wow.
To the original poster, yeah, that was kind of amusing actually. I don't think I've had a similar experience where that has happened at home, but we did have one at school but were caught. My friend an I were in junior high at the time, and we had just finished a test in an office and were bored. So we started writing random stuff with my notetaker. She wrote something about the vice principal involving the F-word and had the volume turned up. A guy started talking with us, and we assumed it was another student, so we played it, probably assuming he wouldn't understand the speech. (It was an old Braille 'n Speak with the robotic type of voice those had.) But he did catch some of what it said, and it turned out to in fact be the vice principal. He was shocked, and we both got lectured by our VI teacher. It was embarrassing then, but we laugh about it now. Stuff like that can be uncomfortable or embarrassing at the time, but they sometimes do make for an amusing story to share later. *smile*
Oh man, busted in a major way. lol
As someone else said, usually with our speech software sped up, most sighted people can't understand it anyway. Of course their immediate question is, "What did that just say?" However, I have learned to be careful what I read around different people. For example, I tend not to read the Zone if there are others around who I wouldn't want hearing some of the content around here. It's just a matter of discretion. And yes, Domestic Goddess, your experience is amusing, in an embarrassing sort of way. Live and learn, I guess. Smile.
I wouldn't be embarrassed in that situation I would simply say if they commented about what they heard yeah it's on a random website, I did not write it, I do not say these words so what is your problem? if I did that's another story but you just read a board topic so I would say yeah, it was a board topic that someone decided to create. and, I do or do not approve of this language anyway.
